Just like a Rural Resort
When architect Cate Creemers and her husband, Robert, fell in love with this 5000sqm property that overlooks the flood plains of the Wairoa River, Cate envisaged a pool that would reflect the shape of the terrace carved out over millennia. “It’s such a beautiful site that looks out over the polo fields towards Te Nikau Pā and will never be built out,” says Cate.
The in-ground concrete pool teams her design skills with Robert’s horticultural knowledge and passion for planting. Frontier Pools constructed the pool to run level with the lawn: it is eye-catching from the house, but not a scene stealer.
An in-situ concrete wall with a plaster render, arcs around the terrace. Behind it, a ha-ha ditch mass-planted with jasmine and Ilex Largo hedges settles the structure into the land.
The Frontier Pools team advised the Creemers on a plaster finish in French Grey for interior of the pool, giving it a gentle presence beneath the wide skies. Sandblasted and tumbled.
Chambolle Naturelle limestone coping, hand-cut into curves, keys into the contemporary form and glass Vixel mosaics in mid grey are a touch of luxe on the waterline.
Garapa decking extends the sinuous shape of the 9m x 5m pool. “We reduced the length of the pool itself by a metre from the original design, which didn’t make a great change visually but made a big difference to the price,” explains Cate.
The decking ties in beautifully with the Abodo-clad house and will silver off naturally blending the structure even more seamlessly into the backdrop.
The couple chose a freshwater pool system with the pump shed hidden down the bank, out of sight from the house. A small section of frameless glass fencing is another invisible element.
A timber bridge across the ha-ha connects lawn to pool. It is a serene place to sit, legs dangling in the water, and stare out at the scenery. On searing summer days, an underwater concrete ledge termed ‘the beach’ is the coolest little spot in Clevedon for cocktails with a view.
