With an abundance of rivers and lakes and an extensive coastline, it comes as no surprise that we are a nation fixated with water and water sports.

While the concept of a backyard pool is not new, what can be achieved through clever design and technology has elevated the swimming pool from afterthought to integral design element.

Devised by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects, the featured swimming pool, which was built by Frontier Pools in association with main contractor Day Construction, appears simple in form, but much is happening below the waterline, says Neil Runciman of Frontier Pools.

“In order to maximise the view from the elevated waterfront site, the architects have placed the house and outdoor area on top of the garaging. This means the swimming pool is suspended above the garage, which required the pipework to be set into the pool structure.

“Not only that, but the entire concrete deck foundation has been literally latched onto the pool.”

Due to the intricate nature required by the construction process, Runciman and his team worked side by side with the builder to achieve a seamless integration between the two forms.

“It definitely had its challenges, and there is 100% more time involved in doing this type of project over a standard in-ground pool. That said, this level of work is our specialty bringing concepts off the page and off the ground.”

The same level of attention that went into its construction can also be found in the pool’s finish. The interior features a Quartzon surface in Ice Blue with glass mosaic tiles at the waterline.

Underwater halogen lights ensure the effect remains eye-catching at night and a concealed fully automated, slatted pool cover keeps maintenance to a minimum.

“A singular response to the architect’s vision, this pool is an integral part of the homeowners’ lifestyle,” Runciman says.
