Transforming a closed-off 1990s kitchen into a vibrant family hub, this full renovation in Remuera, Auckland, has redefined the way this family of five interacts in their home. With an emphasis on practical luxury and thoughtful design, the kitchen now serves as a central gathering place for cooking, homework, and family meals.
A Thoughtful Redesign
The original layout featured a separating wall that isolated the kitchen from the living area, leaving the cook feeling disconnected from family activities. By removing this load-bearing wall and expertly installing a steel beam, we created an open-plan space that promotes togetherness.
Craftsmanship at Its Finest
At the heart of the kitchen is a stunning 3.2-metre engineered stone island, elegantly honed for a sophisticated finish. This expansive island not only provides ample workspace but also includes seating for four, making it the perfect spot for casual meals or family gatherings.
The cabinetry is crafted from solid American white oak, featuring a crown-cut design and a natural hardwax oil finish. This choice not only enhances the kitchen’s aesthetic appeal but also ensures durability—scratches can be easily sanded and re-oiled, making it ideal for a bustling family environment.
Functional Layout
Every detail of the kitchen design was carefully considered to enhance functionality. Soft-close hardware and full-extension drawers replace traditional cupboards, ensuring easy access to stored items. Integrated Fisher & Paykel appliances, including a double DishDrawer positioned conveniently beside the sink, streamline the cooking process.
A concealed 1.4-metre scullery behind the main run offers additional space for a second oven and bulk storage, keeping the main kitchen area clutter-free. This thoughtful inclusion ensures that everything has its place, maintaining an organized and efficient cooking environment.
Lighting and Aesthetic Harmony
The lighting design further elevates the space, with two elegant 900mm pendants hanging above the island and dimmable LED strips underneath the wall cabinets. This layered lighting not only enhances the kitchen’s functionality but also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for family gatherings.
To maintain a sense of continuity throughout the home, the existing rimu flooring was re-sanded to seamlessly match the adjoining living area, tying the spaces together beautifully.
Project Timeline and Execution
This impressive transformation was completed over a nine-week period, with the family remaining in the home throughout the renovation. Careful staging allowed for the setup of a temporary kitchen in the laundry, ensuring minimal disruption to the family’s daily life.
With the design and build executed in-house and structural engineering handled by a local consultancy, the project was completed on schedule. The owners were so pleased with the results that they have since requested the same oak detailing be carried through to their laundry space.
Advice for Homeowners
For those considering a similar kitchen renovation, it’s crucial to plan the placement of the sink, dishwasher, and bins early in the design process. This ‘working triangle’ is essential for a functional kitchen and can greatly impact daily usage.
If a scullery is on your wish list, be realistic about its accessibility. A well-placed scullery can become a daily asset, while a distant one may turn into a neglected space.
Lastly, opting for oil-finished oak over lacquer can save future headaches. Its repairability means that minor damage can be fixed quickly, preserving the beauty of your kitchen for years to come.
